Debra Stipe was born on October 21, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She grew up as the oldest of three girls in a family with limited means. When she was five years old, her father died unexpectedly of a heart attack. As the eldest child, Debra took on many responsibilities at a young age. In high school, she worked two jobs to help support her family. Despite these challenges, Debra excelled academically and was accepted to the University of Tennessee on a full scholarship.
